I have a '98 Dolphin with 2 roof ac's. The previous owner obviously did not maintain proper filtering for the units and they have crud on the fan blades and some other areas from dust/moisture build up. When turned on, there is a musty smell that is obvious and deodorizers help but don't want the must/mold that is there.

I took the cowling off and the top cover of the blower unit and did some cleaning but it needs to be removed and scraped/brushed to get clean.

I don't want to remove the unit from its mounting if possible so as not to have to reseal, etc. Is there a way to remove the fan from the box it is in so I can clean it? It doesn't seem obvious how to do it without dismantling the whole ac unit.

Thanks for any help. This will be an early Spring project before I need the ac's.

John

Not my area of expertise, but the place I usually start with is looking for manuals and found one with an exploded drawing and while there are likely to be detail difference between years and models this may be a starting point.

Not sure what model ac you have.

All can be disassembled from the top to access fans/motors. Typical rv ac design puts blower fan and evap fan on opposite ends of the motor shaft. One motor for 2 uses.

My older rv (89) ac's had plastic boxes on top. A few screws and a few clips and I had access to the blower fan. A few more screws and the motor and both fans blades were out. Set screws and fans were off. Good access to the blower box for cleaning, too.

My newer rv (98) has ducted Duo Therm Quick Cool units. I have only replace the motor starter capacitor, but the blower fan is encased in metal and foam. Looking at my pics, I see screws holding it together. I am sure a few screws removed and I would have access to blower fan and ducting.

These things are not a complicated as you think. Evap coil, cooler coil, motor with fans and compressor. Compact box and roof mount.

Don't be intimidated.

John and all,
When cleaning our A/C units I noticed the original style filters were deteriorated and falling apart. After pricing them, and seeing that the new filters were just a thin foam screen over the rubber/plastic frame, I came up with a better solution to replace them. I ordered a sheet of activated charcoal foam, stripped all of the original filter material off of the rubber/plastic frames, then cut and glued the activated charcoal sheet to them. Considerably cheaper than the OEM replacement filters, and they now provide real filtering of the interior air.
Good luck on yours!
