Hi All:
We have a Dometic RM2862 in our 98 DSDP. We took it to a Dometic service center to have the recall mod done and they discovered some yellow residue which indicates a leaking cooling unit that needs replacing even though the frig is working fine now.

We need your suggestions on where to purchase and how much $$$ to pay for a new or reman cooling unit or complete frig. Also, we are DIYers and would like yawls opinion on how difficult it would be to change out ourself?

Thanks in advance

Don, Lisa, and Alexa

It is a bit cumbersom due to the large size of the fridge but not a difficult job at all. We did ours in about 4 hours. I can strongly suggest that you do NOT buy a new or reman Dometic unit. Rather an aftermarket new unit from a reputable manufacuter, much better quality and longer lasting. I got mine from Pines RV and it was MUCH better built than the OEM dometic unit. Cools faster and stays considerably colder.

Amen on Pines Rv. I installed one of their units on Norcold frig and it works better than ever. Cost--1025 delivered and was fairly easy to install. I would recommend them over any dealer and its made in the USA.

last year we replaced our 30 year old Dometic with a new one since it fit the same hole and no modes required. It is really bad they they ca;t build them like the older units...that lasted.

The new Dometic weighs 30% less than the old one.

Best price we could find on one for me to install was at PPL Motorhomes in Houston. Might be worth checking on the Internet.

A year ago my coolant unit leaked and I bought a rebuilt unit for $425. I got a $100 refund when I returned the old one so it cost $325. They paid shipping both ways. It was not difficult to replace, just took about 4 hours. I had a friend help remove the refrigerator and put it back in. My refrigerator is a Dometic NDR-1062.

Did you get unit from Dometic, or other source? I am a penny pincher, but will spend the money I need to for the best choice if needed. Thanks in advance if you post.

I bought the coolant unit online and I don't remember the name of the company. You can do a Google search and find a lot of companies that sell rebuilt and new units.

I had already had the recall done on the refrigerator. All the recall does it try to prevent a fire after the unit leaks. Mine leaked when the refrigerator was turned off.
