How has this worked out for you? I know it's been a while, so I was wondering if you got it solved.
It occurs to me, based on your post that maybe there is a current limiter that stops the motor when it's all the way in (normally). If it's seeing too much current or the sensor is bad, it could just cut out.
One check for that would be to have someone push the awning in during retraction to keep that from happening.
Mine is like some of the other posters in that the clutch or drive shaft is worn out.
