Draining hot water heater

If I drain water from the trailer using the low points while the faucets are open & the hot water pressure valve open, about how much water is left in the hot water heater? David

Hi,
If you don't drain your water heater, even though you drain the system at low point, you still have almost 90% of water in the water heater tank. You have to take out the tank's plug to drain fully your tank.

I was hoping to finally be able to skip that part. Oh, well.

i don't know about 90% water left behind. last year I opened the low point drain (opened the pressure relief valve on HWH) and let it sit for about an hour while I did other things. then I went to drain the HWH. there is no drain plug so i pulled the anode rod as it sits at the bottom of the tank, and it was already empty. only possibility is it drained out thru the low point drain.

I agree with John.

Most if all water will drain out. It depends on how low the lowest pipe is on the tank.

If you open a hot water tap as well as the low point drain, all the water should drain from the heater tank eventually. Mine does not do a very good job of it, though. Just dribbles out after a brief initial flow.

Furthermore, you don't get a nice fast flushing action to remove sediment in the bottom of the tank. For that reason, I drain annually using the tank's own drain valve and then reverse flush several times with a hose as well.
