EMS-HW50 - shop says can't install??

Just trying to clear some air.

I bought an HMS-HW50 for our coach (because I didn't want one I had to drag out every time) and I ran by an RV shop who told me "That surge protector won't work with your type of shore power"

hmmm

Can anyone clarify what that one means?

Maybe you weren't both on the same page as far as product and trailer wiring? Other than that, that's dumb.

Interesting, I wonder why they would say that. You do have a 50 amp service with your coach so I don't have a clue but might learn something?

I totally do have 50amp service. He said something like... since the bay is all closed up, they could not get behind the cord to install it. Our cord disconnects from the back bay panel with some goofy twist plug.

Could they not have just cut the shore cord, and installed inline with the cord?

I wasn't sure what an HMS-HW50 was so looked on the internet. By the photos I have one in my 2004 Winnebago Journey.

I'm thinking they just didn't want to fool with it and fed me a line.. So I'm trying to find any validity in what he said.

Many folks use the portable unit but do solar as you comment. Cut the cord, but then install a plug on the coach side of the cord to mate to the portable unit. Then install a plug on the cut off cord which connects to the portable unit. Thus way you have a portable unit that stays safe inside and still just the one connection to make.

As for the shop not wanting to install. Sounds like they think there is not access or space to do so.

I installed my portable that way.

When I hard wired my surge guard in that's all I did was figure out where I wanted to mount the unit inside the electric bay, then measure out how much cable I'd need to reach where I would mount it, then cut the cable removed the outer insulation, stripped each wire and attached them to the appropriate output terminal. Then attached the rest of the cable to the input side of the surge guard. The hardest part was reaching in the bay because I mounted mine on the back wall. It's really an easy install, with all wires being color coded.

Precisely what I was thinking. Easy peasy. I should just do this myself, it's not rocket science, I just needed the convenience.

Yes, I'd think the tech was lazy. If you are the somewhat mechanically inclined you can do the install yourself. As you said - it is not rocket science.

You can do the install. Piece of cake. Did you get the unit with the gauge? That is a great feature I think. You can see the power being used, volts and error message for faults, etc. The gauge you can mount inside for easy viewing. Let us know how it works out.

I did, and because of the shop, I had to run out and get a pole mounted portable... $$$
