Maybe someone else can chime in here to shed a little light. My understanding is that if there are multiple batteries, they must all be the same type (AGM, wet-cell, etc.), age, and condition (and obviously the same voltage). An older battery wired in parallel (12V) or in series (6V) with a new battery will drag down the newer battery. If you have an older battery and want to add another, you might need to buy 2 new batteries. If that is the case, the good news is that you now have the option of buying the type of batteries that best suit your needs. Perhaps two 6V golf cart batteries will work well for you. These batteries are not too expensive and they are very rugged. If you go with golf cart batteries, they will be 6V and they will need to be wired in series (negative to positive).

paz,
you covered the basics very succinctly. I would suggest that genem visit one of the battery tutorials that are posted in several areas in the forum.
genem, if you will click on find at the top of the page and type battery, uncheck "in this forum" you will find alot of different threads about batteries and adding batteries. You might want to try this link http://www.macandchris.com/RVBatteries.htm as it gives some good info on adding batteries, selecting batteries etc.
good luck and we look forward to hearing about how your project went
