Foam Gasket Deteriorated - Porch Light

I have a large, round, clear porch light that burned out a bulb. I had an 1141 on hand and put that in, and it works fine. However, the foam gasket fell apart in about 10 pieces when I took the lens off. I think the light might be a Bargman, but I'm not sure. It appears to have 8 screws holding the lens on, but 4 of them are dummies.

Has anyone had to replace this gasket?

As always, thanks for helping me find my way around my new-to-me rig.

Go to Michael's or some other craft/office supply and look for sheet foam, often used for crafts. You can trace the light fixture base and cut out our own gasket. You can further waterproof it with a bead of caulk on either side of your new gasket.

Visit a napa or other well stocked auto supply and look at the bulk hoses and see if one can be split to then be placed on the edge.

Windshield washer hose sounds good.

Split it with knife or sharp scissors and silicone it to the lens with the ends meeting in bottom.

That was what my wife said. I was thinking about using a large "O" ring. One may buy a bulk "O" ring kit. The proper size ring material is cut to length then glued together with the special adhesive. I have one in the garage, just-in-case.

How I Fixed It

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Just to complete the circle, here's how I solved the problem. I replaced the 1141 bulb with a 4-watt, 480 lumen LED. I also ordered a Fel-Pro gasket material kit (part # 3060) that contained two cork-rubber sheets, one rubber-fiber sheet, and one rubber-cellulose sheet. I measured the diameter of the lens and used a compass to draw on a sheet of printer paper. I cut it out for a test-fit, made a slight adjustment, then tried to draw on one of the cork-rubber sheets. Unfortunately I couldn't see the pencil marks left by the compass, so I did it again on the blue rubber-cellulose sheet. I drew a concentric circle an inch smaller in diameter, which gave me a half-inch "lip". I used a pair of linesman's scissors to cut the gasket. I then marked and drilled screw holes at the appropriate locations and installed the lens. Seems to be working great, and the LED puts off plenty of light.

Good fix. Now PLEASE remember to turn the light off when going to bed. OH! How I hate the neighbors light shining into my bedroom all night. Thank you. That will be my rant for the day.
