I'm thinking of trying to clean any crud in the vent pipe that extends to the rooftop on our Fridge and was wondering how others have done this. Did you put a large rag on a stick and slide it up and down or do they make a vent brush for this purpose?

That's what I did, but a repairman took a hammer and punch to the pipe and dislodged a lot of rust that didn't come clean with my swab???

The best way to clean the flue of rust and soot it to access the top of the cooling unit where you will find the chimney cap. This cap and baffle hanger must be removed by pulling up and out. Cover or remove the burner from under the flue. Use a 1" steel or brass bottle brush with a long handle (handle could be attached to rod but very securely, you don't want it to come off in there; it will be a tight squeeze) and run the brush all the way down and all the way up several times. Blow out all the debris that has fallen out and reassemble every thing. Be sure to clean and re-install the baffle. I do not recommend using a chisel and hammer as you might weaken the welding on the cooling unit and possibly cause a leak later.
