Furnace Removal - 92 Winnebago Brave

Suburban SF25 furnace - blower will not turn. Worked when I bought it in 2008, not used until attempted start in 2010. Blew fuse.

Upon investigating found yellow jacket nest and blower squirrel cage froze, will not budge.

Bought new motor. Downloaded the Suburban Manual for the SF25.

Instructions are extremely basic:

Disconnect Gas - done.

Disconnect Power Supply (Electric) - Label wires as necessary.

Came in for camera and decided to post to see if anyone had any tips, suggestions and advise before I go any further.

Update 14:00: Confirmed earlier observations: Cannot get the furnace case to move out past the opening. Could this be due to the duct work (flexible dryer tubing)? Cannot get the furnace itself to move more than a few inches out of the case because of electrical wires (4) that pass through the left (rear) side of the case. Do not think I can disconnect these wires unless I can move the furnace out of the case so I can reach them.

Not in a hurry as next trip is not until until late August. However, will be camping at 9,500ft in Colorado, I'm thinking I may need the furnace.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated (other than taking it to a dealer, money is in short supply.)

Thanks a bunch,

Photos Attached

No access from inside the RV. Small opening under the reefer but the furnace is enclosed in a metal box (called the cabinet in the manual) on all sides but the one facing out. The furnace sets on a metal plate that is screwed to the cabinet.

Two of the ducts attach to the back of the case (facing in, opposite the open end).

I will get pictures from inside tomorrow morning, still 104 outside and higher in the RV.

Only wires (power in) enter through a small hole on left side of furnace cabinet (as you stand in front and look at it, rear of RV to left also). Two blue, 1 each red and yellow. They all run behind and under the main squirrel cage housing.

Will not disconnect any wires until I know what to disconnect or August 1st.

Thanks,

Inside Pics, more outside too.

Good Morning,

Not much to see on the inside pics. The ducts seem to be tight, with no more slack to move, so thinking they will have to come off.

Backed off a little on the outside pics to better show the cabinet. The one pic shoes the furnace pulled out as far as it will go from the cabinet before the power wires hangup on the cabinet.

I'm thinking my next step will be to remove the ducts. It is 90 right now, forecast is 106.

Your thoughts appreciated,

Ready to disconnect the power supply wires

Removing ducts was next, two I could reach the clamps, loosened and they almost fell off. The two on the sides had the clamp screws hidden. One twisted off, the other I pried off with my long-handled screw driver. Those two will be fun putting back on!

That allowed the cabinet to move out but not all the way (see pics). Got hung up the the duct attachment fitting.

It did allow me to see that I was not going to be able to disconnect the wires by removing them where they connected to the furnace. They will have to be cut so I marked the wires with the codes from the "original" wires.

Next step will be to cut the wires and remove the furnace. Then replace the motor.

Then reinstall.

Access to wires from inside is through rear cargo compartment, they are all located to the left front of furnace.

I think the furnace enclosure is too small to allow rotating but I will check that out. Either way it looks like I will have to cut the wires as the furnace cabinet does not allow access to the connection points.

Thanks everyone,

Furnace Removed!

Once the wires were cut and I moved them inside the cabinet, furnace came right out.

The enclosure is definitely too small to rotate the cabinet. I will have to remove the duct mounting flanges to remove the cabinet.

Thank you nightriderrv for holding my hand as I proceeded and thank you DonDee for your tip.

I will update when I have the furnace installed and running again. At least I can replace the motor indoors, 96 right now and 106 in a few hours.

Y'all were wonderful,

Once I got the furnace out and took a quick look was wondering about that because I want to move two of the one's on the side to the back. I will check that out next week end, sadly, I'm still working.
