Gell coat question.
Finally pulled the trigger and bought a new motorhome. Took ownership a few weeks back. Was told to make a fix it list, which I've been doing, just minor stuff.
However, yesterday,to my horror, I noticed three, six inch scratches in my gel coat. At first it went unnoticed because the sun must hit it just right, but now it's glaringly obvious.
It looks as if it was sanded down because there are scratch marks evenly on either side of each big scratch as if someone used a block with sandpaper. It is smooth to the touch, so either gel had been reapplied? Our maybe some clear resin? However when viewing it dead on, I can see the discoloration and the deepness of the scratch.
As many of you know, they're using pigment on the fiberglass so it looks closer to paint, but because in my case, the brown color makes it much more obvious than the white of all my previous MH.
It's been repaired, either by the factory or the dealer.
My questions to you all are:
Can gel coat be repaired in a small area?
Is it reasonable to expect this repair to look as if the scratches never existed?
Years ago I had a boat and the technology just wasn't around that could make a gel coat repair in a small area without looking obvious, has this changed?
Is it possible to make a repair that, for the purpose of warranty looks acceptable, yet a few years from now looks like crap for whatever reason?
Thanks in advance
Tracy
