Generator fuel consumption
Hi all,
Just about ready to head out for the first time ever. Planning on dry camping in Southern Utah for a couple days next week before heading east. 111 today in Phoenix and can't wait to leave!!!
Anyway, quick question: Any idea on how much fuel my 14 yr old Onan 7500 will use on an hourly basis? Just had Freightliner change fluids/filters and give it bill of good health.
Thanks much.

1/2 to 3/4 gal per hour depending on the load.

from http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/pdf/s...ets/a-1486.pdf
7.5 HDKAT 0.21 Gal/hr with no load, 0.56 Gal/hr with half load and 0.96 Gal/hr with a full load. YMMV.

I use .6gph as a burn figure for my Onan 7500. For two years that has worked out very closely when I buy fuel.

7.5 kw Onan with just over 600 hours has used about .6 gph since we bought her new in 2005....everyone's numbers seem spot on. That's usually running 2 ac units, refer, and sometimes hot water as well. Probably using half power (31 of 62 amps available) or so.

I wish it would be practical to have a second fuel tank for the generator and hydronic burner so that we could use dyed fuel!

I'm not sure it would be practical even if it were practical.
In the past two years I've run about 175 gallons through my gen. What's the tax we'd save? About 15-20 c/g?

Its more the principle than the practicality :-)

Using red fuel got me thinking.. what would be the timeframe for the ROI if adding another fuel tank for gensets and hydronic heating?
I found published numbers at the US EIA. It looks like the average tax for Fed and State combined averages out to around 45 cents/gal for all of us. So using that number I chose an average of 2000 running hours on a genset, which is not unusual for *most* RVers for the time they own their unit. If the diesel units burn on average of .75 gal/hr that would equate to around 1500 gallons used. Average price now is $4.00/gal or $6000.00 for the 2000 hours of use. If you save the 45 cents per gallon it would bring the cost down to $3.55/gal and change the total cost to $5325.00. $675.00 difference over approx 2000 hrs of use. Not sure how many could add an additional fuel tank for $675.00 not to mention being able to find red fuel while traveling :-) I do agree with Steve.... it's the principle, not the practicality. hehe

In every State & Province I've worked in you can fill out a form and submit it along with the receipt(s) and get a refund of the 'road taxes' on fuel (gas or diesel) that was used for "off the road" purposes.
We do it regularly, rarely is it even questioned.

You might want to look at the post:
Nifty way to run a Honda or Yamaha inverter Generator from your motorhome. It is in the Class A forum.
