Generator Issue

Onan 5500 Marquis Gold Gas. Runs fine sitting still. Put it on the road running the generator it dies. It might run 3 minutes or 10 minutes then it dies.

It ran for 3 hours while we sat waiting on the tire man. Runs fine sitting on the shoulder of busy interstate. Thank Goodness.

What you all think? Hubby is going to tackle next weekend.

Generator Issue

I had same generator in previous coach. Same issue. Mitigation was to keep the oil level not just enough to full, but full to the tippy top. Else the low oil sensor would erroneously kill the engine. YMMV.

Hubby said it's full to the brink. Had someone mention a gas regulator??

After the shutdown occurs press stop 3 times, it will blink a single digit code. Press stop one more time and it will display a 2 digit code. Tells us what the 2 digit code is. You can do that right now and it will display the last code that caused it to shut down.

36 is a fuel delivery issue usually. I'd check the fuel line from the tank to the generator. Alot of people lately having been having problems with fuel pumps not supplying fuel.

There is a screw on the float bowl of the carburetor, when you experience the fault one the screw and count the seconds it takes to drain the float bowl after opening the drain screw 1 turn.

Then press and hold stop the prime the system and run the generator for 10 min and shut it off. Open the drain screw 1 turn again and see if it takes the same time to drain again.

Alteratively you could get a piece of fuel tubing and rig up a fuel tank for the generator and isolate the problem from the rv fuel system or a generator problem.
