I have a Honda 3000 generator and I have made a slideout tray for it in the front compartment of my 5th wheel. I want to be able to run it while it is on the tray for short stops but my 50amp cord plugs in on the other side of the rig at the back and is too short. I don't want to be dragging out extention cords just to plug it in for quick lunch while traveling or rest stops. The generator only puts out 30amps so what I want to do is cut what length I need off a 30amp cord I have and hardwire it to the RV, I am just not sure how to go about it. Do I just bring it into the breaker box and connect it where the 50amp wires run to or do I have to get a 30amp breaker, I know the 50amp cord has four wires and the 30amp only has three. One more question does the shore power run to the main breaker box and then to the charger/inverter.

You will need to install a transfer switch in line between shore power and generator power. Click on "files" button below the forum info bar and click on Iota 30 amp Transfer switch. In the Owners manual, you will see how this works and it is not hard to do if planned out a little bit. DO NOT TIE GENERATOR POWER STRAIGHT INTO THE BREAKER PANEL.

Why not just run a permanent extension cord to a convenient place on the RV and leave it connected to the ginny and all you would have to do is slide out the tray and plug the 50amp cord into the permanently mounted ext. cord and go.

Mr. Wizard I checked out those manuals but when it comes to power i'm there is still a few things I'm not quite sure about. First does my 50amp shore power run directly to the main breaker box and then to my converter to charge my batteries. Second do I run the 30amp power from my generator through the transfer switch then into the main breaker box and will I have to put a 30amp breaker into the main breaker box.

The converter charger is powered through the 120 vac power from the distribution box. This means that any power, shore or generator, will recharge the battery bank. The transfer switch is in between the shore power and the generator; it selects only one power source feeding coach. When properly wired, no need for any additional circuit breakers. Only wiring from generator to transfer switch placed in line of shore power cord back feeding the distribution panel.
