I'm going to install a progressive ems hw50c surge protector.

If I hard wire it, I know there's a by-pass switch if the unit fails. However if I have to send the unit in for repair, I'd be out of luck.

The other option as I see it is to put pigtails on unit and power cord.

What have you done ??

I guess you have two options. Don't shorten the ends of the cable that you take from the out side of the ATS and goes in the out side of the hw50c. Or if the hw50c does fail and you have to take it out just splice or wire nut(temporarily) jumpers from the cable to the ATS.

I would go with a 2-part install

1: The equivalent of a Hughes Autoformer Install Package This is basically a plug, an outlet and a pig tail.. I made my own.

Then use a PORTABLE Surge Spike guard/Power line Monitor.

That way

1: If it fails. you pull two plugs, plug one into the other outlet (The only one that will reach) and you are good till it returns to you

2: If you upgrade to a new motor home,, You pull two plugs (Wait a sec, weren't we just there,, yes we were) Tale it to your new home on wheels, put another Hughes install kit in the new one and plug the power line monitor back in.
