Has anyone added an exhaust fan behind the Dometic Fridge to aid operation ?

I do some hot weather RVing and I thought installing a little exhaust fan just to move the heat up thru the roof vent, might be a good idea to keep the Fridge running as efficiently and as cool as possible. Have you done this ? What fan did you go with...12 vdc or 115 vac ? Where did you mount the fan and how ? Any tips ? Many thanks.

Hi RVlover,
I have added fans both inside the Dometic and outside in the back area.
For the inside fan, I added a computer CPU cooling fan. Wired it to the hot side of the light switch. To see this go to http://www.irv2.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=11492
This fan is on all the time the Dometic is on.

Outside I put fans in the top and bottom of the chimney. To see this go to http://www.irv2.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=5640 The top chimney fans are gone. The south Florida environment got to them. The fans pictured work great. These fans are on a switch I have on the wall next to the Dometic.

All the fans are 12 VDC.

My set up is pretty much like Gary's. I used a 3" "muffing fan" from radio shack inside and a 4" outside and mounted it in the top of the exhaust stack. The inside fan is attached to the bottom of the frig shelf behind the cut out for milk jugs. Need to put it some where that it is not likely to be blocked. Use 12 volt which is available and easily wired.

For the outside fan I use a lighted on-off switch and you can pick off a 12 volt source from the back of the frig.

The inside fan really helps to keep the inside temp more even.

I have a cheap Radio shack indoor/outdoor electronic thermometer mounted above the frig and ran the outdoor lead down the edge of the case and came in on the lower corner of the frig. It is attached to the shelf in the rear center.

I would recommend a solar-powered chimney fan kit. The frig vent roof covering contains a solar panel to power the fan. Sure it doesn't work in cloudy weather, but it isn't as hot either. Install chimney fans at the top, not at the bottom of the frig.
