Heat/AC Thermostat Thermometer Reads 00

After replacing two thermostats I finally found the answer to this problem. I shared the solution with the Tech Topics writer at Highways magazine but he, mysteriously, never published it. I know other people have had this problem because there are at least two columns where he has provided the wrong solution. I have asked him twice to enlighten his readers but to no avail. Here is the email I sent him explaining the correct, inexpensive solution:

Hi Bob,
You responded to Joe McChesney of Hudson, Florida in the 2009 issue of Highways regarding his flourescent lights affecting his heat/AC thermostat. I had the same problem in my 2007 Pace Arrow and after replacing the thermostat twice (yes, I am now on my third thermostat) a service tech at Fleetwood finally knew the solution. There is a piece of electronics called a choke filter, Fleetwood part number 355469 and costs about $20 and can be purchased directly from Fleetwood parts department. It cancels any interference from nearby flourescent lights. You simply loosen the thermostat mounting screws and unplug the harness on the back. Plug in the choke filter to the thermostat and reconnect the harness to the choke filter. Problem solved! I would advise a call to Fleetwood (1-800-322-8216) to confirm that this choke filter fits their coach model.
I read your column in every issue of Highways and you are usually right on. Somehow this one slipped by you. I'm not surprised though since my RV dealer didn't know the solution and neither did the first two or three people I talked to at Fleetwood! That should make you feel a little better.
Regards and keep up the good work,

I've noticed that guy seems to have his own information source, which he trusts without question. IMO he would do well using the irv2.com search feature to find better solutions.
Thanks for sharing the information about the filter.

Yep, any time you see 00 on a thermostat, there is a communication error and it is usually a dc voltage interference. Either, fix the culprit or suppress the effects of dirty dc back feeding up the power lines.
