heat pump not working

I can set the control for heat pump but the regular furnace
comes on. The air-conditioner and the furnace work fine when
controller is set for either. The rear unit works properly for all
three. Does anyone have any suggestions what to check and
what could be wrong?
Thanks in advance for all responses.

Yep, between 40 and 35 the heat pumps quit working and some automatically switch to aux heat.

Plus, with these systems, the propane furnace will supplement the heat pumps by coming on first until the thermostat temp is within a 3-5 degrees (depending on unit) of the air temp.

Thank you for the replies. I just tried it again and still no heat pump.
It is 52 degrees outside, and 71 degrees inside. Set the thermostat
for 73 degrees for heat pump but the propane furnace immediately
came on instead. All other functions are working properly and the heat
pump was working last winter, but that was last year. I am starting to
think it may be a circuit board problem. Does anyone know of a test
procedure I could perform myself to see if it is the circuit board?

Once again thank you for your responses, Mark

As was said, there should be a 5 delta where the heat pump does the heating, over 5 and the aux heat comes on.

Our rear unit works for all 3 but the front only starts the furnace and a/c. In our case it's because there is no heat pump in the front unit.
