We have 2002 Hr Imperial. Two heat pumps. Used them last fall all was well. Tryed last week end. The back one come on line and ran as it should. When the front one came on the fan would run. But when the compressor tryed to kick in it would draw hi votage and shut down. Just like maybe it was froze up. Has this happened to any other mombers?
Any Ideas?

Dave

Dave, were you plugged into 50 amp or have the generator running when you experienced this problem? You may have a bad start capacitor for the compressor and could very easily be repaired. Give us the make & model number. Are you able to trouble shoot electrical circuits?

Thanks Mike that was going to be my next thing to ck. I was on the Gen set. I have a voltage meter on the circuits. Will have to get the manual and see the model numbers. Will get back to you later. This is the first coach with heat pumps. Sure like them. Much better than the noisy furnace.

Thanks

Dave

Thanks Monaco Momma

It helped but didnt realy pertain to my problem. Mike had a good suggestion. Will work on that for the time being. Im more of a lurker than a poster. Have been around Rvs for the last 40 years but some of the new technolegy sometime baffles this old man. Seen pics of your coach looks great.

Thanks for your help.

Dave

Thanks Mamma Mike and Ron for the replys. This is for mike. The unit is a Penguin. Havent been on top of the coach so dont have serial # But looking at the wiring diagram it shouldent be too hard to find the start capacitor. Looks like its right out in the open. Will try to get on top and ck this week.

Thanks
Dave

Had a similar problem last week. The rear AC worked fine but the front AC fan would run and you could hear the compressor trying to start. About every 45 seconds the compressor would try to start but would only hum for a couple of seconds repeat the process but the fan stayed on the entire time. Turned out to be the start cap which was covered under warranty. They installed what was called a hard start cap assembly. My breaker would not trip nor would the AC shut down.

To; Davestoy,

Have 2 a/c-heatpumps and I found out that the h-pumps only heat when temps are over 30 degrees.

Don't know the technical reason but the same info was in the manuals.

Your problem could be one of the above mentioned or just too cold.

Hope this info helps

Aime--

Thanks Sixpack & ajbjrvers for your replys.

Sixpack what you stated is what happened to me. But beings the unit is five years old I will ft the bill. Pretty much coming to the conclusion the its the hard start capacitor. Will see if I can get on the roof tomorrow and ck it out

Thank you
Dave

Hope this isn't hijacking.

While in Florida this past month, I tried using the heat pumps to heat as the night temps were in the 40s and 50s. Perfect conditions for heat pump.

Rear heat pump was very loud and would only run for a minute or so at a time and keep cycling. A/C mode worked fine.

Any ideas?

Not a highjack, Java...
Hey, Davestoy... did you try the AC unit while having your problem...or can you check it out BEFORE you change the start capacitor this weekend...

Try taking the cover off the A/C and spin the fan by hand. Make sure the elec if off when you do this. I've had several A/C fans stick. Getting them started again usually works. s/Toby
