This is a problem that I have had a couple of times. The heater (gas) will hit its set point and the fan will just keep running. It will hesitate periodically as if it were going to turn off and then it keeps going. I had to unplug from electric and turn off battery power to get it to stop.

The real question is:

What do I replace??? There is the thermostat and some kind of control board behind it and maybe something else that I don't know about.

I guess that a secondary question would be:

How do I diangose it? It happens rarely but is very annoying.

My first guess is a relay on the control board sticking but it is totally a guess. I am on the road now but will dive in further when I get home.

Hi bruceh,
This may sound dumb, but check your T'stat. Make sure the system is set to auto. Other settings may allow the fan to run independent of the burner.

Thanks for the reply and, yes, it is set to AUTO. It dosn't do this often. It happened once last night and we have been using the heater for four days now with just the one failure.

I'm watching this closely. I have the same issue. We fulltimed in the rig for just over 2 years. Then moved into new house in Oct 08. In Feb of 09 pulled rig to new work place for me to fulltime in. As soon as hooked up batterys blower came on and won't go off. Finally pulled the fuse. And using 2 space heaters.

When my furnace does this it means the burner tried to light 3 times and failed to light. The fan will stay on until I turn the furnace off at the T'Stat. It will do it randomly. Once I turn the T'Stat off, wait a bit and turn it on again, I wait to see if the burner lights. If not, I need to determine the cause of that problem (usually low/out of propane).

I guess the point to this is that the safety feature keeping the fan on may be activating. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of the details of how this feature works.

I guess that I wasn't clear. The heater had fired and warmed up to the set point. The burner went off and the heater fan never stopped. It would hesitate periodically bur keep running.

PLenty of propane and power as we are hooked up.

bruceh,
You were very clear and I understood what you said the first time. My post was to indicate a feature that keeps the fan running may have failed, keeping the fan running all the time (randomly or not). The furnace may, every once an awhile, think it needs to kick in this safety feature, even though it is not needed. The only other thing I know of is the circuit that runs the fan for a short period of time after the burner turned off. That circuit may have failed.

Please give us the make and model # so we can be of better help. The older furnaces use a delay time delay relay; the newer ones have this delay for the fan motor built onto the control board.

According to the build sticker mine is an Atwood model 8525. Trailer was built in the spring of 06. Folder with all info for the rig is at my Ex'es house. Will have to work at getting that back.

Yours is built onto the control board. You might be able to run the unit to set point and a few minutes after the burner shuts down thump the relays on the control board. If the fan motor stops the points were stuck and will probably do it again. The only long lasting fix would be to replace the contorl board. Save the old one for a spare in an emergency.

Thanks,
Bruce, do you have this

on the furnace. Depending on the serial number, you could have either. The above is the time delay relay that stands alone. If you do not see this in the controls area then it will also be on the board. Let me know what you have and I can help you diagnose.

Thanks Mike. Is there a difference between the dinosaur and OEM boards?

I am going home today. Will tear into the heater tomorrow and make a determination of my heater type.

I have already tried thumping the thermostat area trying to unstick a stuck relay.

Shall I post my serial # or just base my diagnosis on the standalone relay?

Thanks a lot,

Bruce
