Temperature should not exceed 130 degrees. Where you operating on LP gas or electric mode? You first want to be sure the heating element is good and not partially shorted to ground. This could continue to heat water; even around thermostat. If is is good, then the operating thermostat is not opening the circuit at the proper temperature. Then also the ECO (high limit) thermostat is defective as well as this should open at about 190 degrees. Let us know what you find.
