My project is done.
140 feet of #6-3 copper in buried pipe.
A/C and coffee maker shows 3 volt drop 123 to 120.
I'm happy...easily worth the $450 and the sweat.
Thanks for everyone's advice...gave me confidence to do the right thing.

I'm glad you decided to go with equal size neutral and hot. I had an open neutral in my garage subpanel after it burnt out from too much current- it was smaller than the hots, and whoever wired it didn't size the primary breaker right. The neutral burnt out when I had a roofing contractor there and they were running 3 air compressors all out of the garage on 3 circuits on the same phase split.
