One of my Honda 2000i generators starts puffing white smoke - smells like it's burning oil. Anyone have any ideas? Not a real lot of hrs on it. Maybe a sticking valve?

I don't think a sticking valve would display that symptom, but too much oil, an unlevel genset, or broken ring might do it - of course, using a 2-stroke fuel mix by mistake (using wrong fuel container) could too...

Sticking valves have certain symptoms. Exhaust valve sticking can cause back-fire through exhaust pipe. Intake valve sticking can cause back-fire through carburetor. The only way oil can enter through a valve is worn stem guides/seals. Incorrect grade motor oil can cause your symptoms, in addition to what Gary said.

Thanks guys. I may have over filled it. I'm using 10-30W.
No backfiring. I'll keep running it + see if it clears up.

Check your oil level. Typically is it is sucking oil in through something mechanically wrong then it'll usually run bad too.

If the oil is overfull correct it properly. Just letting it suck throughis bad for it.

Well I'm glad I tought mine not to pick up such a bad habit.

Seriously, did you mistakenly put put the wrong fuel in it You know the gas can that is missed for your 2cycle Weed Whacker

Take it to a Honda certified repair shop and let them have a go at it. It might be worth the time, money, and trouble.

My Honda 2000i actually has some slightly worn rings (previous owner never changed the oil). And, while not smoking, I was getting that oil burning smell while it was running. I changed to Mobil 1 10w30, and stopped getting the smell. It also doesn't seem to burn oil now, either, and uses less fuel.

Wow, I'm surprised I put off doing anything for so long. I took it to a repair shop, they said probably worn out engine $$$.
I figured I might as well try some of the micacle engine fix it chemicals...I've always been sceptical;-)
I picked up some "Seafoam" engine cleaner, added some to the fuel, a little to the oil + ran it. After 15 - 20 min it started running better, after 1 hr could run an electric heater + voltage was good!
It appears to be fixed! At least for now!
