How did you get your new AC unit onto the roof?

For those of you who installed your replacement AC unit yourself:

How did you lift 100 lbs AC unit onto the roof of your RV?

We cheated. ..

Have a scissor lift we used to build shop and made cantilever forklift with it to put ours up.

Others have used long 2 X n lumber as rails then pulled them up.

Or locate some strong backs to lift them for you.

Leave in box and with rope and pulley yiu may be able to slide them up a pair of rails or extension ladder used as ramp.

Tony, thanks for the great ideas.

I think I found the right tool to rent from Home Depot. It is a Material Lift manual unit that reaches 12' and the base should roll under the chassis to allow sliding the Box off the forks. $40 for four hours or $60 for all day.

It transports in the back of a van or suv so makes it feasible.

This might be of interest to others with the same situation.

Let us know how that works for you. One of these days (hopefully a long time in the future) I'll probably be needing something to change one out.ji

I used a dealer (for obvious reasons) and they used a front end loader.

They claim one man operation for it but the thing weighs 200 lb. Good luck to one person trying to get it in and out of a van or pickup. Something like that lift that is towable would be a better choice.

Had my rear unit replaced in an RV park in Tucson this year. They wrapped padding around ladder legs to prevent damage to the RV where it touched the roof. They (man and wife) then carefully wrapped rope around the a/c unit and he got on top and pulled it by skidding on the ladder legs. She helped some by pushing from below and guiding the a/c up the legs. but she wasn't a big girl so he did most of the work. The whole thing went pretty fast and worked fine.
Good luck, good health and safe travels!

The video shows one man using leverage and the wheels loading it into a van.

A friend who is a welder & machinist had a small crane on his truck. He came over and lifted it up on the roof!

No, it doesn't weigh 200 Lbs. I just had one replaced, and a friend and I had to move the old one to the dumpster. With two of us it wasn't difficult, just awkward. Dometic lists the shipping weight of the Penguin II at 125 Lbs. unit weight likely a bit less.

When I bought my replacement AC, the salesman asked where I wanted it, and I pointed "up there".
