The Kohler Model # K582EP Spec# 36396.

The gen starts and runs but when you take finger of starter switch it stops.

Fishfry, you probably have a 120 volt A/C output problem. Most Gensets have a circuit with a sensor that shuts down the Genset if it does not find 120 volt A/C output from the alternator end within a few seconds after the engine starts. The usual cause is either the sliprings (Brushes) are worn out or bad or if you have a newer model it may be a bad electronic control board or module.
Hope this helps. Be sure and let us know the final out come when you get it fixed.

Best to you - Glenn

EDIT: Fishfry, I should have also noted that you can check this by turning OFF the GENSET BREAKER(s) or making sure there is NO CALL for 120 volt A/C on the Genset. If the engine still dies after releasing the starter switch then it is probably not either of the two causes I have posted about above, and may be some sort of fuel supply problem or other engine related fault.

Although I'm not familiar with your particular genset, it's not uncommon for shutdown protection circuits to be bypassed when the starter switch is engaged. If your genset has a low engine oil level switch, you might check to be sure that it's not shutting the engine off when you let off the starter button.

It has no 120 hook up to it. It is out of the camper.
The remote switch is not hook up.

I will check all the safety switches next.

I will be using it for a camp I have for hunting.

Could I bypass the circit board and hot wire the safety switches to coil from a hot 12v (new) switch to make it run. Run/off switch.

Fishfry, I really do not recomend bypassing any safety switches or hotwiring the engine to run, but it is your call. I am sure you can hot wire the engine to run, but you may still have a problem with the alternator-end output. I do not have any wiring diagrams for Kohler, so I can't help you there.

Glenn

EDIT: The model number you posted is for the 23 hp Kohler engine. If you are going to try and find wiring diagrams for your Genset you will need the actual GENSET model number which will be something like "7RMY62". This is a very old Genset. Good Luck in your endevor!

Fishfry, According to your serial number you have a 1976 model. Here is a url with all the Kohler specs. If you go to the base URL and then to the KOHLER forums you may be able to find someone that can help you with the wiring schematic.

Kohler Genset Info
