I have troubleshooted the steps which were disconnected mechanically from the drive mechanism. All the electical tests checked out except the motor failed. Removed the motor from the drive mechanism and just for the fun of it put 12 vdc to it, voilla it worked. I think the cam was jammed into the motor and would not turn. So now I need a few new screws, bolts to reinstall. My question is, what stops the motor from driving the steps out and in? is it the control circuitry that knows the duration and direction the motor needs to turn? and then knows the next movement is the opposite?

Thanks for any advice in advance
