Kwikee step motor Fail & Fix

While putting the MH in storage the steps failed to retract all the way. Knowing we will be leaving in January I got out the tools and pulled the motor off. After I got the motor off I was able to check the gears which operated as they should and determined I had power to the motor connector. Before ordering a new motor I decide to take the motor apart to see if it was repairable. The first thing I did was remove the gear housing cover and discovered there was a lot of rust inside. Seeing the rust I decided to totally disassemble the gear case and motor. What I found was that the shaft the plastic gear drives had rusted to the point it was so stiff it barely turned. I was able to polish the shaft so it turned easily. Luckily the plastic gear and all the motor parts were fine. When I took everything apart I found very little grease in the gear case which makes me think condensation may have caused the rust. I used lots of marine grease on the parts when I reassembled it. Besides laying on the ground to remove and reinstall the motor the hardest part of this job was removing the little snap rings that held in the rusted shaft. The steps work better now than they ever have. Caution - Power disconnected when working on the steps!!!!

Thanks, mine are doing the same thing, go down fine, but stop about 2 inches from full up. If you help it up with one finger, it goes all the way up.
