Kwikee steps not working

While out on a trip our steps have stopped extending. They're about 95% retracted and won't go in/out. The motor doesn't even make a sound.

I've verified the door switch is working as the light above the step goes on/off.

I'll be pulling fuses once I get a replacement - need to have them anyway.

Any suggestions?

When this happened to me, someone suggested I crawl under there and bang on them with hammer... I thought someone's crazy!

but out of desperation, I tried it... (make sure you're not in a spot where the steps could extend into your body.)

Problem solved! to whomever made that suggestion.

I'll give it a try but did you bang in the steps themselves? I'm assuming not the motor.

Check your wiring. Get under there and look at the connections. Especially grounds - make sure they are clean (no corrosion) and tight. It is amazing how little it takes for stuff to not work. Our rig had exposed wire nuts and other weird things that added up to a non-functional step. Once I cleaned everything and soldered good connections everything's been fine since.

Best of luck!

Make sure the door is open when you venture under there. Stay out of the way in case they do start to extend. If the door is closed and you have an arm or hand under there it will get very painfully crushed.

Yes, rap the motor with your hammer. It won't do much good to just bang on the steps. When they start working again, lubricate all the pivots well.

I did bang on the steps... not super hard, but hard enough. I crawled under on my back from the middle of the front of the rv, and banged the back of the steps towards the way they should move when they extend.

LOL... your definition of "banging" may be different than mine. One might be able to cause the steps to extend by "BANGING" on the rear bumper, if he banged hard enough.

Well, 4 to 5 taps of the hammer solved the issue.
Thanks for the tips! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't tried it.

Now that you have the steps working be sure to lube the pivot points
