The light inside the switch that controls the hot water is out. I first thought the bulb was out but replaced switch and still does not burn. The switch works, tank works but switch will not light up.
Ideas?

If this switch is for the LP gas mode of heating water, the light should only come on if there is an ignition failure. Similar to the "check" light on the refrigerator. If the light comes on and stays on just turn it off a second and then back on to get the water heater to try re-ignition.
If this switch is for the 120 vac electric mode of heating water you could have a open neutral for the light to operate in the switch.

It is for the 120v. Just don't know where to find the problem at. If it is open I need to find out where it goes to.

My light is also out on my 120v switch. I am planning on buying a new one soon so I am interested in the thoughts provided by this thread.

The 120-volt water heater rocker switches in RVs are notoriously short-lived (due to heat build up). I've been waiting for an LED based rocker switch for sometime. In the meantime, I've gone through three new switches. My advice...unless you only use the feature occasionally, don't bother replacing it until a better switch comes along. At $15 a pop, it gets to be a little expensive just to see that little glow.
As for why a switch would work but not light up, I'd make sure the wiring is kosher and then put in another switch. I believe there are 3 wires that feed the switch. Best of luck.

Already tried another switch. It works the tank, but will not light up just like the current switch. I don't know what kinda switch you have but these are only $5, so it is not the switch. I need to find out where the ground wire goes to and that might be the answer.

I assume the switch light used to work
There are 3 wires. Hot, Switched and Ground. Assuming your switch is properly attached, you have a bad ground

Yes it did work. I figured it was the ground but do you know what to do or where it may go to? Does the ground go to the tank?

It's actually a neutral rather than a ground (those terms tend to get used interchangeably but they are not) and it could go to any neutral (white wire) in the 120vac system. It most likely does NOT go all the way to the heater, unless it is quite close by. If you can find another neutral close by, you can use that instead.

Believe it or not, 3 different new switches that I tried were bad.

I installed a residential light switch on my 120vac water heater. ($.49) I then installed 2 120vac indicator lights. One comes on then we have the heater on, the second one comes on when the thermostat is calling for heat. This way we can look and see if we have hot water. One light on = hot, two lights on, = heating. Pictures at the link below.
