Looking for some water pump advice.

The Shur-flo Extreme Series 5.7 we have is leaking for under the cover while there is city water pressure and will not turn on when I try to run the water with it as I would if there was no city water. I removed the front cover and got a stream of water in the face. The water was coming out of the little pin sized hole in front. Would this be an issue that can be fixed with a re-build kit? Also I was pricing replacement pumps and saw that the 5.7 got some poor reviews. I saw that Flo-jet makes a VSD 4.5 but saw no reviews online for that model. What advice would anybody have on whether to replace the pump or try to fix it?

Sounds like you have an issue with your back-flow valve downstream of your pump, first of all. I don't believe city water pressure should be running backwards into the pressure side of your pump. Check that first.

I've had one of the Shur-Flo 5.7 pumps for about 5 years now, and I'm not impressed. It was very expensive, and the concept is really great, but the performance leaves something to be desired. Mine also developed a leak in the front cover, and Shur-Flo does not sell a replacement for it. You can buy a kit of the internals, but not a new cover. Makes no sense. The reason I bought it originally is that I also have another, older Shur-Flo pump that needs a new kit in it. But they have stopped making ALL parts for that one.

In Sept 2008 I sent a detailed description of the problem with my 5.7 to their customer service email address, and they have never responded. Really great customer service.

The bottom line is I will not be buying anymore Shur-Flo pumps. I think Flo-Jet makes better pumps anyway, but I really thought that new Extreme 5.7 would be the ultimate pump. I've relegated it to another old RV I have and mounted it in a tray to catch the drips.

If you want to try contacting them, their email is customer_service@shurflo.com Maybe you'll have better luck, but don't hold your breath.

The water isn't flowing backwards. I pulled the pump took it apart and reassembled it. Haven't had a chance to test it out due to our spring snow starm. Looking at replacing it with a Flo-jet.
