Warm water dribbled down the side of the tank will "bead" up at the point where the liquid propane begins and the gaseous propane ends..
This is very accurate and you can see exactly how much liquid is left in the tank.
Another way is to simply go to Wal-Mart or your local RV store and buy the magnetic tape that simply sticks to the side of the propane tank and changes colors where the liquid and gas meet.. cost about $5.. also pretty accurate.
