Post on another forum about using a household garbage disposal for a sewage macerator. States a 1/3 or 1/2 hp disposal will pump up to 100' through a 5/8" hose. Checked Home Depot and Lowe's and the GE disposal would appear to be a good choice -- slimmer and lighter than some of the other brands.
Anyone been this route, pros/cons. Certainly much cheaper and built better than the RV macerators. Stainless steel impeller blades, 110v with more torque.

Getting a connection between the disposal and the pipe bonnet would be the hardest part of making it work I think. I did not know that the disposal would pump nearly that far. If you make it work, keep us posted.

I suppose that a household garbage disposal could act as a pump, sort of, but relies on gravity for the "disposal" part after it CHOPS the waste.
My macerator is plumed in semi permanently and only costs a little over $100.00, while pumping up hill through 200 feet of hose.
I highly recommend looking at http://www.phrannie.org/phredex.html if you haven't already Chief.

I guess I'm skeptical. There is no "pump" in a household garbage disposal - it is a gravity feed device. I suppose the impeller blades that do the maceration impart a generally downward movement to the mashed garbage, but the recommended procedure is to continually run water though to flush it out while in use. It takes a lot of pressure to move plain water though a 5/8 in hose and I don't see it happening as described. Could perhaps add a regular pump after the disposal to get some pressure, though.
But a real RV macerator pump isn't all that expensive anyway - about $160 and you can get a entire portable system for $240 on Amazon - pump, fittings hoses and carrying case.

Not to mention, that garbage disposal is 120v AC...
