Microwave??

My microwave/conventions oven has a problem. Don't know if this is a easy fix or not? My oven works fine with no issues but the microwave smells like wires are burning. Will be a few weeks before I can get it to camping world.

LaRoInKat, according to most articles I've read on this, the "burning wires smell" usually will indicate that a component is failing. Here is one article that says exactly that (from this article, click here):

Quote:
Odors
Burning odors such as melting plastic or burned wires when the microwave is in use indicate that the electrical components within your microwave are failing. Do not attempt to repair or troubleshoot electrical issues with your microwave, especially if you smell burned plastic or wiring. Either replace the appliance or contact a trained technician to repair it.
A technician does not have to be an RV technician. It can be any tech that services home appliances. Therefore, personally, I would not take it to Camping World if it was me.

If it can't be fixed, you can replace it yourself by taking measurements and finding a replacement that will fit the space occupied by your old one.

My suggestion would be just to replace it as micowaves are pretty inexpensive nowadays. Having a technician look at it may cost almost as much as replacing it with a new one.

JustMO.

LaRoInKat,

Roc is substantially correct, but you never said if this was a new device or a new condition with an old device.

If new, it may just be burning off the "new stuff" smell. If it last more than a few minutes (really), it is a warranty issue. Call the dealer and ask what they need you to.

If it is an out of warranty thing, you probably can't get it repaired for less than the cost of new.

Good Luck

Matt

Your best bet may be to call the manufacturer to see who services that particular brand in your area. We had problem with our Sharp microwave/convection oven last year. Even though it was out of warranty we found a local company that would send a technician out to look at it.

As luck would have it the unit needed to go to the shop for repair. However when all was said and done the repair only cost $75.00 including the service call. Unfortunately the owner has since passed away so the shop is now closed.

The Sharp 850 watt convection microwave used in RV's is still available at Home Depot however at $589 it appears that there has been a price increase.

That's part of the problem. When both the service center and I called Sharp they said that model was no longer produced, was considered obsolete and is no longer supported. No longer supported translates to they no longer make any replacement parts.

Through my research I found this model is still sold at Home Depot, Best But, Amazon, and about a dozen other online marketers. They are still being sold at full retail prices with no information about being an obsolete and a discontinued, non supported model. When I confronted the service rep at Sharp with the fact that it was still being sold as a current model she hung up on me.

When I called back a second time and got the same story from another service rep I asked what would happen if someone buying one of these units has trouble. The response was that if it was still under warranty it would be replaced by a compatible model currently in the lineup. If it was out of warranty (over 1 year old) the customer would have to buy another unit.

To me selling a product for $589.00 without telling the customer it has a potential service life of 1 year is a sleazy and unethical business practice. In the case of the units installed in motorhomes it's more likely the unit will see 2 to 4 months of actual service rather than 12 months of service during a calendar year.

The Sharps are being sold at Home Depot so they should be eligible for their 5 year extended warranty. I wish I had purchased one last year when they were over $100 less as the plastic parts on my 2001 are starting to fail and fall off the front of the oven.
