Microwave oven

Hello everyone

I have a 2004 Sharp Model R-1874 microwave/convection oven combo in my RV.
For some reason I have to restart the microwave oven about every 60 seconds. There is no info in the troubleshooting section of the manual. Any suggestions?

If you have a MSV (Modified Sine Wave) inverter that is probably the root cause of the small motor failure. Most motorhomes are sold with these cheaper inverters.
I ruined a new freezer AND a new MSW inverter when I learned all about these MSW ruining electric motors. I bought a PSW (Pure -or True-Sine Wave) inverter, and installed it (about 4 years ago), and everything is great.

We have a 2000 Watt MSW inverter in our DSDP, came from Newmar that way. The GE Advantium (a factory special order) and the ceiling fan don't like the inverter power. Burned out the control for the fan and the Advantium just doesn't put out full power. I'd like to replace the inverter with a PSW one but I just can't justify replacing a perfectly good inverter on a 12 model year old rig.

Put an add in your local newspaper, or on line (Craigs list), and sell that hummer.

When I upgraded my old KVH dome antenna to a Winegard Traveler HD antenna, I advertised the KVH dome in the local newspaper. The first guy that came to look at it, bought it on the spot- He had a big 5th Wheel. Didn't quibble a bit and I put $225 in my pocket---

Well, I keep looking at new rigs so spending a $2,000 and then turn around and trade it in wouldn't pay. Maybe I should have done it 6 years ago!!
Putting a Magnum in would be easy as the controls take the same wiring as we already have. Wiring for the auto gen start is pretty close to done now, just the cost of the inverter and controllers since I can do the work myself. Still kind of expensive even if I got a couple hundred out of the old unit.
Have a friend that just installed a new Magnum in his MH, he may trade the rig for a new one and has offered to exchange. Problem is I'd have to buy a new Magnum MSW inverter and swap for his new Magnum PSW, then if the deal doesn't go through I would have to switch back and have a new Magnum MSW inverter that I couldn't use. Might as well buy the Magnum PSW unit outright and install it in our rig.

It is the damper motor and or the microswitch associated with it.

I had the problem several years ago. You have to remove the microwave to repair it.

Do NOT attempt to remove the microwave by yourself. It is very heavy and bulky.

Here is a beauty of an inverter. There service is great. Free shipping. I have the SK 2000. I had to install a separate transfer switch as this model (the link I gave) was not available 4 years ago.

My only problem is I only have a two battery bank in the rig. I only dry camp occasionally.

But if your going to spend big bucks to upgrade your MH forget this.

You can get into one of these for about the price of one new tire.

With $200 on a sale of your old inverter, you'll be into this beauty for about $600- Doing the work yourself.

Spring for a Magnum, install it and keep the old one to put back in your rig if you decide to sell it. Chances are the new one will have an MSW also. And you do get what you pay for. A 2.6 amp draw at idle and 88% efficiency is worth little if you dry camp much.

Hey srnnelson... I just replace our R-1870 with a new R-1875-T Sharp Micro/Conv. oven. Arch is right, it's the damper vent motor or it's relay that causes the 59sec. syndrome. Our unit was 9 years old, so I could not justify having it repaired as the waveguide(think really expensive) or other components are probably reaching their expiration date. YMMV. I really liked the unit(and DW does as well)and ordered the new unit from Home Depot.

It came to the house and I installed it...tomorrow I have to replace the power receptacle with a quality one, we'll be back in business.

As long as one doesn't mangle the box it comes in and it's cutouts are cut according to directions, the installer will have no trouble with the installation(I use the box for removal as well). If you go back with the Sharp 1870 series, the back mounting plate and the two top mounts are exactly the same. The old backing plate's vent seals were in good shape, so I didn't install the new one...both units were set up with the recirculated vent feature.
