Multiple propane tank hookup

What happens when using an extend-a-stay with 2 60# cylinders connected in parallel as the auxiliary and the main tank is a 40# (OPD). The output of the extend-a-stay is connected to a throw over regulator. Will this work and will the 2nd 40# tank take over when the 3 tanks (in parallel) are empty?

If the ASME tank valve is connected to one input side of crossover regulator and the two 60# cylinders are connected to the other input of the crossover valve, the ASME tank service valve is open and the 60# tank valves are open, the crossover selector handle is selected to the input where the two 60# tanks are connected then the system will work as you question. Why don't you post a photo of the connections and tanks?

I haven't done this yet so I don't have a picture. The setup is on one side of the regulator is a 40# DOT (OPD) tank with an extend-a-stay fitting. There are 2 60# cylinders going to a T and then going to the auxillary port on the extend-a-stay fitting (3 cylinders on one side of the regulator - all open). The other side of the regulator has 1 40# DOT (OPD) cylinder. I would like all 3 cylinders on the one side of the regulator to empty and then throw over to the other side. Hopefully this would allow 160# of propane to be used on one side of the regulator and then throw over to the other side for an additional 40# of LP. When ready to travel it would allow quick disconnect of the 60# cylinders from the system.

I thought they went from a 40# to a 100#(23.6 gal).

No, a 40# with the EAS fitting, then 2 60# to a T and then to the EAS fitting auxiliary port and then to the regulator. A 40# on the other side of the regulator.

As long as all cylinders are open, the crossover regulator pointer is in the direction of the three cylinders and as long as all lines before regulator are rated for high pressure (350 psi) you should be good to go. The crossover regulator is automatic and will allow the cylinders selected to be used first and when the pressure is reduced (empty cylinders - they will all be considered one) the pressure from the last 40# cylinder will be used automatically, however the fuel supply indicator will turn to red when the first three are empty. Once you get it all put together and leak tested, post a photo so we can check everything. Thanks

That looks good and I am sure you have checked for any leaks with Dawn soap solution.
