The propane fired RV refrigerator is a very old technology...ammonia absorption. It blows most peoples mids as how do you put in hot and get cold. The absorption cycle is a chemical process and not mechanical. It depends on a thermal difference to work and when it gets hot out side, it needs some help in the form of extra fans on the outside coils.
It also benefits from a small fan inside to stir up the air and keep the box at a more even temperature.
The largest ammonia absorption system I have seen was a -15 degF plant that was built on multiple skids about 30' x 14' x 14 ' high and stacked 3 stories high. There are a few larger ones. It operates on the same principle, just bigger and uses three stages or triple effect.
There a lot of systems using lithium bromide and water as water chillers where waste heat is available to power them.
