New Texas Gulf Coast Member with AC issues

Just bought a 2000 Tiffin Allegro with 2 Duo Therm roof airs. The one in the back works Ok but is pretty Loud. It blows into duct work which blows throughout the rest of the bus.

The other one is in the front and just blows straight down near the Driver/Passenger .

Both have mechanical wall thermo stats.

The front one didn't work at all when I got it. you could hear the compressor/fan trying to start but not. I did some troubleshooting and found the start/run caps both bad.

Replaced same and the front AC came to life albeit now it appears to be more of an ice maker than an AC unit.

I've been told I need to replace the relay board and get the unit recharged.

So we plan on keeping this machine for quite a while and be Full Timer soooo, Should we just bite the bullet and replace both units?
If we do can I get a model with more then 1 fan speed.
I've never replaced one of these what pitfalls do I need to lookout for?
can I replace it with any unit or do I need to match hole sizes, wiring sizes/locations?

Not sure what "ice maker" means - is the compressor freezing it and the fan isn't blowing internal air?

Generally, you can't "recharge" these - I mean you can, but it requires brazing and if you can replace the unit for $600 (your cost, not installed) - most people don't work on them very hard.

You have to match the unit to the thermostat and duct configuration (ducted / non-ducted) - PPL sells a bunch of units, off the top of my head and yours is common. It's pretty easy to replace, hardest part is getting the unit on top of the RV.

With the a/c's being 10 or more years old you might as well go ahead and replace them. By the time you pay for repairs economics says replace. As soon as one thing is fixed another goes bad. We replaced ours and they sure seem to cool better.
Good luck, good health and safe travels!

I would replace them. You will be using the units for a number of years.

You listed a couple upgrades such as quieter operation. Sounds like a winner to me.
