What model of Thetford? There are several different ones.
Can you describe the sound to give us a clue? Rushing water? Maybe air bubbling?

That is the hissing/bubbling noise of the air purging from the anti-siphon valve. Very irritating at night.
I think by code, Thetford and others were required to add an anti-siphon valve in the water supply line to the toilet so dirty water can't drain from the toilet back into the fresh water lines when you lose pressure.
Personally, I think it's not necessary since the water outlet is up by the rim. I tried to locate mine to remove the valve but it's not visible and probably inside the bowl so it requires removal of the toilet. My 96 Jayco didn't have one so it's just on later models.
Hope this helps.

Our's is very noisy as well. I'm thinking of replacing it strictly for that reason. The toilet in our old 1998 Winnebago wasn't nearly as loud.

I just replaced mine w/ a Thetford. It too, is noisy but it MOVES water which the old one didn't. This ensures proper flushing and the noise is a small price to pay. Close the lid, Close the door and make the best of it.
