For the past year I have had problems with the refrigerator not defrosting properly. Finally the smell of amonia and a "no co" code has occured. I am looking at options to replace the cooling unit. It appears from things that I have read that a rebuilt units do not last very long. I am looking for recommendations of sources for a replacement cooling unit. I have seen one site that advertises "Amish Built" new replacement units for about $1000. Their URL is RV Cooling Unit Warehouse

Does anyone have experence with this company or any other recommendations?

Fortunately we are no longer full timers and have a bit of flexibility.

I also have inquiries in to a south florida service center to see what they recommend.

Thanks, Al

You Bet!!!! I just did mine a month ago and their unit works great. Their shipping was to a yellow freight terminal in NC where we were parked. Went over with my Jeep, put it in the back and took it back to the campground. My frig sits up off the ground above a small cabinet. I made a 8 in tall box to support the unit while I changed out the cooling unit. I put it on a small rug to help when I slid it out. The wife helped steady it to keep it from falling on me. It weights around 250lbs so be careful. Took my time and from start to finish it took me 4 1/2 hrs. No, I have never done one and its real easy. If you can change spark plugs you can change out the cooling unit. Download the info from their website and it tells you everything you will need to know. If you have and questions just yell.
George

Two gone RVN,

I just read your post regarding the Amish CU, I'm looking at replacing mine from the same outfit. I have a question for you.

First let me say we boondock in desert areas and this past summer it got to 115F, we supplement the cooling in the reefer by putting in a gallon jug of frozen water, it keeps the top shelf at 38F which is fine for us.

My question is do you think the Amish unit will keep the temp at 38F if it's 100F+ outside?

We had the service place get us a new CU from Norcold when we had ours replaced a little over a year ago. It works better than it has since we bought the coach new.

Al doesn't mention what his RV is. Be aware that if it is a Winnebago, the refrigerator is installed with a rollover kit that includes the normal fasteners PLUS bolts into the sidewalls of the refer compartment accessible through the outside access panel, bolts from above accessible inside the roof vent, AND the refrigerator is glued in with silicone. It is VERY difficult to get out. So, if your RV is a Winnebago, plan accordingly whether you plan to do it yourself or have someone else do it for you.

In my opinion, you cannot beat the Amish unit although you will have to install it yourself. Call the salesman and he will tell you the differences and they are major! One reason I bought from him was his honesty...and yes he's a saleperson as he helped me before selling his unit to me. Yes, I think you will have a better frig and it will keep things cooler even in the 100+ degree weather. Ours has worked better than ever in hot temps or cold.

TinCup, this may explain what you need to know the design of the cooling unit.
Thanks for the write up two gone rvn may attempt this myself.
Might as well have a Amish built unit for my AMISH built Newmar.
