Norcold 641

I have a Norcold 641 2-way no icemaker. Started having problem with refer box not keeping cold. Have had refer on for a couple of months straight, which is a first for me in 4 years of ownership. Went on trip for a few days and turned unit from normal 5 out of 9 to 7. Box is now 41 and freezer is -6? Not frosted up. I have a cooling fan in box. Will be getting on roof to take of vent cover to make sure it is clear. What should I be looking for first?

thanks for the help.

Look for the thermistor and make sure it's clipped on the fins in the proper location. (Check owner's manual for information)

Is it just not cooling on 120 v? Might be a bad heating element. Not sure you'll learn anything from on the roof, you might try opening outside access to the refrigerator and making sure air is flowing in the vents in the panel and out through the roof. Small 12 v 'muffin' fans can be installed to improve air flow if that's an issue.

If its not cooling on LP gas, check that the flue stack is clean and flame adjusted properly.

Seems to be about the same on gas or electric. When traveling the last few days we were on gas when on the road and I did not see much difference. I turned thermostat up to max of 9 a couple of hours ago and temp is now 41 and -5. And I moved the fan inside box from top shelf to bottom. Does it seem right that freezer would be very cold at -5 but box would be warm at 41?

When our old N683 Norcold played out, this is exactly how it went. First the box wouldn't get cold enough, but the freezer would freeze. Eventually the box wouldn't cool at all, although the freezer would freeze, although barely. It was diagnosed that the cooling tubes were blocked. Goodby fridge.

We opted to replace ours with an inexpensive residential fridge. It has worked fine.

You could try the old trick of removing the refrigerator and turning it upside down for a day or two. That can cause the ammonia, which can build up crystal deposits blocking the tube, to dissolve and run to the other end of the loop. Folks with absorption fridges used to do it once a year to keep them cooling properly.

I may have to try that flip flop trick. First I will shut it off when I go back home in a couple of days. And when I return in a week or two I will fix the outside 12v cooling fans that died. Then we will see. I sure do not want to spend another 1500 or so on another refrigerator.
