Even though our first unit had all the signs of one of the recalls, Norcold said it wasn't on the list. $1,100 later we purchased a new unit. Recall or not; If our new unit is on the recall list and it turns out to be a "band-aid", our next fridge will be a home-style one. IMO it would be cheaper/safer in the long run.

I just talked to the 7th place, same answer, "We don't do Norcold recalls."

Yeah, and who pays for that?
Don't know, I didn't think to ask that.

Well on the 8th call I finally found someone willing and able to do the recall. It is a 60 mile drive to Camping World but that is as close to home as I could get.

They require:
Model #
Serial #
Cooling Unit Serial #
Make of Coach
Year of Coach
Vin #

All of this is required is required before they can even order the part. They will call after the part arrives to schedule an appointment.

I guess I got lucky. The first place I called (about 7 miles away) didn't answer the phone, but the second place (All Star RV in Robertsdale, AL - about 11 miles away) was very knowledgeable and helpful. He got all the serial numbers and info you mentioned and told me he'd call in about a week when the part came in. He even offered a mobile service call if I want it (at my expense) to install the part. Within minutes, someone from Norcold called to verify my address and said the part would go out the next day.

This is what was done to our 1200 back in May.

Last summer while in Michigan a 2004 Holiday Rambler parked next to mine caught fire. The rig had a Norcold 1200 4 door fridge and the SN's were not on the recall list. We were there when the fire was very small and the fire clearly was located in the back of the fridge and just above the heating element. The rig was totaled.

I had my recall done about a year ago and the overtemp sensor was installed and new insulation installed. The overtemp sensor turns off the 12VDC to the fridge. The recall I had performed does not include any function that would display a 900* code or a red light. Is there yet another recall I need done?

SpursMVP,

Even though you had the recall done back in May, this new recall involves installing a faster Thermal Sensor Switch. All units are involved in the new recall, 1200, 1201, 1210, 1211. Everyone that was biult from 1997 through October 6, 2010.

I had my Thermal Switch installed in January, it has to go in again.

By the way, anyone who has a Norcold or a Dometic frig, I would suggest you invest in a fire suppression system quickly. I have a Halon SS-30 and can sleep better at night knowing that I won't lose my life, coach and all the contents.

Dr4Film. Where inside the compatment did you install the Halon SS-30? Is there a reason that you selected the SS-30 versus the SS-25 which provides 400 gram (0.88 lb.) Halon fire extinguishant. Thanks for the information.

chiefdave,

He posted a picture here. See post #11.http://www.irv2.com/forums/f84/confused-about-all-this-fridge-talk-78503.html

Here's a picture of mine. SS-30 was what Mac the Fire Guy recommended.

Bob, Thanks for the picture and info. Did you purchase your unit on-line? It appears that everyone wants to charge and extra $25 for shipping.

chiefdave,

I bought mine from Mac at a rally but they were shipped to my house. Don't have the receipt in front of me so I can't remember if or how much I paid for shipping. The items actually come from Fire Fight, Inc out of Melbourne, FL. Looking at their website it appears shipping is only $9. Check them out here Firefight1 Products

Saw Jeeper John's comment about wanting to put in a residential fridge. You cannot put in a residential fridge without making some important adjustments. I got this from an extremely reliable tech guy I know.

"You have most likely thought of the multiple energy sources that an absorption RV refrigerator can run on .... not only for dry camping but also while driving down the highway .... an absorption refrigerator can operate on 12V, 120V, or LP gas. This is the reasoning that everyone uses ...... but just as important is residential refrigerators do not have door locks. They also are not designed to be installed in a moving vehicle ....... RV refrigerators are secured at the floor and sides of the exterior frame so the don't slide or move while on the road. These issues need to be resolved if someone is considering a residential refrigerator - they will also need an inverter and a bank of batteries if they want the unit to operate while driving down the road. The best application for using a residential refrigerator in an RV are Park models or units that will be placed somewhere and not moving down the road."

Please use extreme caution when using things for RVs that are not made for them. An RV is not a house and its systems are not the same. And house things are designed to be stationery and won't stand up to travel. Be careful out there!!

There are plenty of residential refrigerators on the road in hi-end coaches. It's just a matter of capturing them.
