The Chromate is highly dangerous and can leach into your bones so chromated refrigerant can not be just dumped. In New Jersey too many folks who bought homes where the chromate industry was formerly located had a big problem with it leaching into the foundations of the homes with autopsies revealing yellow chromate rings inside the bones of those that died of bone cancer there.

That said you local hazmat department should be able to advise you on the licensed handlers who are equipped to purge the chromated ammonia refrigerant in your area. Running chromate into a bucket of water and pouring it down a drain or into a hole in the ground is not the right thing to do and poisons the land, aquafier or waterway it finally ends up in. The process of neutralizing the chromate involves sodium hydroxide and of itself is hazardous.
