I have a '89 Itasca Windcruiser and need to replace the Norcold refer. Can anybody offer advise, diagrams, brand selection etc. Sort of new to this rv thing. I want to be able to run without shore power.

Search these forums for "amish cooling unit" and you'll get all you need. This "brand" of Norcold replacement is the only game to play, you won't go wrong. You'll also get videos of how to do the refer replacement.

Here's some to get you started.

Thanks for the links. I have just spent a couple of hours watching them and now feel a little better about what is involved in the removal. I do need to replace the entire unit as mine has many issues that need to be addressed.

Another question I have is do I need a three way unit? When would you use the 12volt operation? Is it safe to drive with it on LP? it appears there are two major manufacturers. Is one better than the other?

120vac and LP (2 way) is all you need.
If you really want look for the mega dollar mega efficient marine 12vdc only models, those would be ideal.... Except on the wallet.
Norcold vs Dometic will be pure religion....
See if the rvcoolignwarehouse (the Amish guy's distributor) can provide a complete unit as well. Worth a call to them and also to see what they would suggest as to getting a complete unit. They will surely have an answer. Give them a call.
