Onan 4k generater oil leak

So I have a really bad oil leak in my 2004 onan micro quiet 4k generater. About a quart in 6 to 8 hours. I found the leak to be in the crank case gasket. I was wondering if anyone has changed this gasket and if so is there any hints they could give.

Thanks.

Before you start, get a manual for that engine.

Too many chances to make big mistakes when doing this job.
If the cam shaft is located by this case cover, special procedures will have to be followed in order not to screw it up bad and have a bunch of parts come springing out at you.

These gaskets seldom fail unless rings allowed blow by of non used fuel into crankcase then it fired or the vent is plugged.

However a few loose screws could cause this.

First with a 1/4 inch ratchet and only fingertip force check the screws to see if all are tight.

I totally agree. Check the torque on the cover bolts but your problem is likely not a bad gasket. Suggest crankcase vent issue.

Before you start removing parts, try to pin point the source of the leak. Take some Brake Clean and clean the whole area where you see oil residue. Run the generator (loaded if possible) for about 30 minutes and go back to see if you can spot the source of the leak. The oil pressure sending unit is a common source.

You don't want to go to a bunch of work on a hunch and find out you still have a leak.

Did you find a parts manual? I have one if you need it. It covers the KY (Spec A-P) and KYD (Spec A-C)

Looks like a big job to replace that crankcase gasket (101-0788) .

I tend to agree, these gaskets don't go bad. A couple other suggestions:

You might attempt to re-torque the cover bolts, take note if any were loose.

If you can pinpoint the location of the leak, you could try mixing some JB weld and use a cotton swab and run a small bead along the seam to see if that will plug the leak.

I did try to retightin the bolts but they where not lose. I cleaned every the at first with the brake cleaner that's how I found it. I'm not sure where the oil pressure sending unit is located but the leak seems to be on the head side right near where the gasket is. How would I go about checking the vent system?

Look for a small hose attached to a cover plate that goes into the air cleaner side of the carb.

Not familiar with your exact engine but they all are similar here.

Look for where the valves would be on the head, usually too side then follow towards center of engine and the usually is a cover to access bottom of valves for adjustment or removal of valves on flathead engines.

For opposing engines one on each side or large one in center.

This cover will have a hose fitting and some have an internal backfire valve that can get fouled.

Simply look inside where air filter goes and look for a second smaller grommet looking thing which usually is the end of the above mentioned hose.

Start engine and look for smoke or air to come out.

Place finger over it and you should feel some pressure of sorts.

Also note these covers are usually where the leaks are common.

Carefully clean with simple green or greased lightening to get all oil off unit then see where it is fresh after running.
