Onan 6.5 gen: surges, backfires ,stalls

6.5NHEFA11579P Onan generator on our 2000 Damon Intruder , ford chassis.
Generator surges, backfires, stalls .
Replaced fuel filter , spark plugs , air filter , plug wires . Still the same
Please help . Thanks
Also when I hit the start button from dash or on generator there is a delay, like its laboring to turn over.

what error code is the gen putting out?

Probably don't have codes in the 2000 model.

2 things to check, sucking air in the fuel line or gummed up carburetor.

Try short fuel line from pump to a gallon can of gas. If that don't change anything the carb may it.

Don't know if they still have them around but there was a pen like thing that you held against the spark plug wire, with a neon light in it.

Something like that or a timming light, to see if the spark is steady while stalling out. A steady spark eliminates ignition troubles.
