Onan 7.5 Diesel Generator shut down problem

Genset could and has quite a few times, just shut down without warning. Will start right up and run for only five minutes or so and continues with the same routine over and over again. Throws a code 24 saying that it's not sensing coolant temp. in first 5 minutes of operation. Then the next day, it runs fine all day long and maybe for days after, so you never know when the next time will be. I'm about to change the sensor, but am hearing about a very expensive module that could be bad as well.
Now, other than a loose wire on the sensor, I can't think how something like this, could have an intermittent problem of this nature.
Anyone experience this and what might have been the culprit?

I had the same issue a couple years ago. We were on the road to Alaska at the time so I did not want to dig too far until we got closer to home.
I figured I would try to eliminate any loose connection issues and go from there. The control wiring on this unit is all in one cable with a connector between the generator and the house. I pulled the connector apart, sprayed both halves with Electrical Contact Cleaner. Applied some Dielectric Grease to the pins and reassembled the plug.
That was about three years ago and it hasn't skipped a beat since.

Worth a try.

Good to know and where might this connector be.
Near the genset, down under and on the unit or elsewhere.
I fixed many problems with connectors in the past, but never thought of that this time and was only thinking of the sensor wire being loose.

There is only the one control cable that runs to the start switch on the dash. Mine runs across the top of the generator and the plug along that cable.
