According to you, your genny is running fine-I wonder who designed it.

Since my son-in-law is an engineer I give him plenty of grieve about engine designs. He also complains about his fellow engineers.

Anyway what exactly does a spark arrestor do anyway? Why didn't black soot come out the cleanout hole when I removed the plug if the genny is leaving black soot marks on the ground from the exhaust pipe?

This is what I found on wikipedia, "
Internal combustion

In the 1950s, the United States Forest Service became interested in reducing the number of fires started by logging equipment in the National Forest System.[3] This interest led to a partnership with the Society of Automotive Engineers and the development of the following test standards for spark arrestors:
  • SAE J335 – Multiposition Small Engine Exhaust System Fire Ignition Suppression
  • SAE J342 – Spark Arrestor Test Procedure for Large Size Engines
  • SAE J350 – Spark Arrestor Test Procedure for Medium Size Engines
Modern technologies have largely eliminated the production of large particulate matter from internal combustion engines. However, as engines wear, carbon deposits can build up on the internal walls of the engine. When these deposits break free, they exit through the exhaust system and present a potential fire hazard. Vehicles without properly functioning spark arrestors have been suspected of starting numerous wildfires, including the devastating Track Fire near Raton, New Mexico in June, 2011.[4]."

I worked for an engineer once who had the theory that one should design for optimum placement and manufacturing and service would figure out how to make it work. He was Chief Engineer of the Division.

Ya I ran it for about 15-20 minutes. The book said only run it for about 5-10 but since I don't know if it has ever been serviced, I want to make sure.

Thanks for the info on running the gen before putting the plug back into its hole. I had so many bumps on my head from hitting the underside of the MH, while working under there, that I didn't really know what I was doing.

As a mechanic , I thought my job was to coin new swear words to use when phoning the engineers ; to ask " What the ....... were you thinking?"
