Basically, troubleshooting engines comes down to checking two things, fuel and spark. Lack of fuel due to a clogged fuel filter can stop it from running while clogged air filters will usually cause running issues without actually stopping the engine except in extreme circumstances. Spark plugs can tell all if you know how to read the colors and/or residues on them and can be a good place to start troubleshooting. Dry plugs may mean no fuel, wet plugs could mean no spark. While removed, you can put the wire back on the plug, ensure it's against the frame or clamp it down and actually see the spark while cranking. My last generator issue had to do with a loose and maladjusted choke. Hope this helps!!! These are what I know about gas generators and some of these things should be similar in a diesel engine...
