Onan 8HDKAK

The gen runs about 2 mins. with no load and shuts down with a 33 code, will start right back and run same 2 mins, same 33 code which is high temp. The gen is a 04 with 250 hrs. Here is what I have found, and done, No blocked air way, fan good, water pump belt good, full of coolant, new air filter, oil filter and new oil, new fuel filter, took out thermostat, and removed temp sense (which came apart, spring, and a covering over it) saw a pic of it and there is a piece on end of spring that did not come out, will work on that next. It seemed like the water pump worked fine. The coolant was clean. It looks like to me that the radiator is very small, and holds very little cooleant, since the temps here in Oklahoma are around 105 or highter, is it just that it can't cool the gen. at these temps. Have not pull the radiator and checked flow yet, would it be just as good to replace with a new one, unless the cost is real high, The gen has run great, never any trouble. Give me some help here, what have I missed and what do I need to do. Thanks, Curt

Sounds like you have checked all of the usual things. You may want to try an infared digital temp. gun and point it as close to the over-temp. sensor as possible while running the gen. Then when it shuts down, note the temp. The sensor itself or control board could be the problem. Only running 2 minutes is suspicious---doesn't seem hot enough for an over-temp. condition to me. Good luck

Does the temp sensor need to be OPEN or CLOSED to work? Did you try with the wires both open and shorted? Last time mine did this, it shut down in 30 secs, it ended up being the oil pressure switch. Just pulled one wire and it ran all day.

The Onan is fixed, it was a temp sensor, and the senor need to be closed to work, it goes open when temp is too high
