My gasoline powered Onan 7000 watt generator smells like raw gasoline when it runs and after I shut it down. I have looked carefully and there are no leaks in any of the fuel lines or around the carb. The exhaust pipe does not have any excessive black soot as it would if it were running nasty rich. I live at sea level in Florida and the altitude adjustment is set for 0. I tried to see if leaning it out by setting the altitude adjustment to 5000 feet might help but still the same.

It starts and runs fine and the output is within specs with and without load.

Anybody ever experienced this. It really stinks and I hate to run it around other coaches because of the odor.

It's got me stumped.

Thanks for any help or thoughts on what to look for.

How fresh is the fuel? Are you using additives? Have you looked at the entire fuel line from generator to fuel tank?

Mine does the same thing and every time I have it checked by a technician they can not find anything and say it is probably gasoling evaporating out of the carb.

My gasoline smell only happens after I shut the gen down though, not during running.

RV Wizard:

Fuel is relatively fresh - less than 1 month old typically. I do used the Marine formula Stabil at every fill up, unless I am going to drive all day, since it is suppose to help with ethanol problems. Stabil says the marine formula is good for all engines including RV's (I think it's just a stronger blend) I have looked at the entire fuel system and nothing is leaking.

I think mine is like Ron's since it is worse right after you shut it down. Could be fumes from heat boiling the gas in the carb. Still puzzled why it does it when running - not as bad, but definitely still there.

I have a 1996 Allegro Bay with a 7000 onan gas generator in it. I have only had it a couple of months took it out two weeks ago and the house batteries were dead. I remember the two carbon monoxide detectors were both beeping so I disabled the one up front above the couch but that did not stop the one in the beedroom. I'm guessing that is what ran the batteries down but not sure. So I plugged the MH into a generator that my son had brought with him and got the batteries charged enough to start the MH gen but then the inverter kept blowing the 30 amp fuse so we hard wired it for the week end and everything worked great. Then the other day I went out and tried to start the generator and it just wont run, it act like it is not getting any gas. I checked the both the fuses on the generator and they were good and I replaced the 30 amp fuse in the inverter and it has not blowen. When I try to start it I open and close the choke but it just wont start. So I'm guessing the fuel filter is plugged,so that will be the next step to replace it. Any one else had this happen?

Well because I'm new at this MH ownership thing I got the generator book out and found out that when the main fuel tank drops below 1/4 of a tank the gen will not run. I guess it pays to read the manuel.
