Anyone serviced their brushes on this model. Do you have to drop the genset to get to the brushes?

Are you sure this generator has brushes? I don't have a wiring diagram but I am under the impression that commutators and brushes are a thing of the past.

So was I adj. But, after getting some good advice from sixgunz, I pulled the brush block, cleaned with contact cleaner and compressed air, and now the genset is working fine.

Can you share the advice you received or should these forums continue to be a "AOL ME TOO"?

Regarding Onans; We call them generators but maybe they should more properly be called Gensets or something similar because they are really 120 volt alternators that don't rectify the ac into dc as car alternators do.

The brushes supply current to the rotor. By varying the current into the rotor thus changing the magnetic field, the output voltage level is controlled. This is done by the voltage reulator circuit in the Onan. The output power comes from the stator winding rather than the rotor winding.

Yes, I did use the wrong terminology when I used the word "commutator". I shot from the hip, which I shouldn't have, since I'm 20 + years removed from my aviation electrician background.

abarkl: My genset had no AC output. Sixgunz said it was an easy fix. It was. I removed the air cleaner housing for better access. The brush block is at the top of the stator housing and has a two wire spade lug connection. Remove the retainer bolt, and the brush block will easily pull from the stator housing. I made sure the brushes moved freely in the housing as they are spring loaded. Sprayed the gunk off with contact cleaner, and then blew everything out with air. Reassembled and problem was gone. I will get a brush block assembly for a spare in case the brushes wear down to the point they need replacing.

bowats..looking at my generator directly behind the circuit breakers i see what appears to be the power producing assembly..there is a black plastic section with 2 white wires plugged to it and a retainer bolt holding it in place..is that the bolt i remove and then pull the assembly out..being unfamiliar with what is inside i want to be careful not to break something..thanks..jim
